Sunset Profile

Overview

Sunset is a very small town located in the state of South Carolina. With a population of 1,466 people and just one neighborhood, Sunset is the 165th largest community in South Carolina. Sunset has seen a significant amount of newer housing growth in recent years. Quite often, new home construction is the result of new residents moving in who are middle class or wealthier, attracted by jobs, a healthy local economy, or other amenities as they leave nearby or far away areas for greener pastures. This seems to be the case in Sunset, where the median household income is $108,523.00.

Sunset home prices are not only among the most expensive in South Carolina, but Sunset real estate also consistently ranks among the most expensive in America.

Occupations and Workforce

Unlike some towns, Sunset isn’t mainly white- or blue-collar. Instead, the most prevalent occupations for people in Sunset are a mix of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Sunset is a town of professionals, managers, and sales and office workers. There are especially a lot of people living in Sunset who work in management occupations (19.72%), teaching (18.15%), and sales jobs (12.43%).

Also of interest is that Sunset has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.

A relatively large number of people in Sunset telecommute to their jobs. Overall, about 10.85% of the workforce works from home. While this may seem like a small number, as a fraction of the total workforce it ranks among the highest in the country. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Setting & Lifestyle

Another notable thing is that Sunset is an extremely popular destination for tourists and seasonal residents. So much of the population is seasonal such that the town’s population swells significantly during the vacation season, and drops again when the season ends. Because of this, much of the local economy is centered around tourism; some businesses may be operated only during the high season. During the low season, year-round residents will notice that the city is a substantially quieter place to live.

In Sunset, however, the average commute to work is quite long. On average, people spend 31.78 minutes each day getting to work, which is significantly higher than the national average.

Being a small town, Sunset does not have a public transit system used by locals to get to and from work.

Sunset Demographics

Do you have a 4-year college degree or graduate degree? If so, you may feel right at home in Sunset. 50.93% of adults here have a 4-year degree or graduate degree, whereas the national average for all cities and towns is just 21.84%.

The per capita income in Sunset in 2018 was $61,153, which is wealthy relative to South Carolina and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $244,612 for a family of four.

The people who call Sunset home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Sunset residents report their race to be White, followed by Black or African-American. Important ancestries of people in Sunset include German, English, Irish, Scottish, and Scots-Irish.
